The Dragon's Egg
by Alison Baird
illustated by Frances Tyrell

On Ai Lien's birthday, her father gives her a stone from China. "It feels special," he tells her with a twinkle in his eye. "Perhaps it is a dragon's egg!"

The stone is pretty, and Ai Lien places it on her dresser. She can hardly believe what happens next. In the middle of the night, the stone cracks and opens... and a baby dragon is born. He's not just any dragon, either. He's the son of the Dragon King of the Yangtze River — and he's magic.

Soon, what had seemed like the worst year of Ai Lien's life becomes a time of adventure and wonder!

When Ai Lien woke the next morning she had a happy, excited feeling inside, the sort of feeling that means the day to come is special in some way.

"But my birthday was yesterday," said Ai Lien to herself. "So it isn't that." Then she remembered the strange, wonderful dream she'd had last night — about a dragon hatching out of the stone her father had given her.

"I've never had a dream like that before," she yawned. "It seemed so real!" She sat up in bed, stretching — and then she sat very still, staring at her dresser. On it were the bits and pieces of the broken stone, where she'd put them the night before.

Well, she thought, that part of it was real, anyway. She looked at the goldfish bowl. The morning sun was streaming through it, so that the fish in it shone as if they were really made of gold.

And there was the baby dragon! He was floating at the surface with just his eyes and nose above the water, like a tiny alligator. His eyes were green as jade, and they looked into hers with a very intelligent expression.

Ai Lien jumped out of bed at once and ran downstairs without stopping to get dressed. Her father and mother were having breakfast at the kitchen table and she ran up to them excitedly.

"Daddy!" she cried, tugging at his sleeve. "You'll never guess — the most wonderful thing has happened! That stone you gave me really was a dragon's egg — it hatched last night!"

Mr. Feng put down his morning paper and smiled at his daughter. "Did it really?"

"The dragon's read and gold, with a green mane," went on Ai Lien. "And he's got green eyes."

"Has he indeed!" said her father.

He doesn't believe me, Ai Lien thought. Well, who could blame him? Laughing, she grabbed his hand and cried, "Come and see for yourself!"
