RUNNING A BOOK CLUB

Q: How do I become a Scholastic Book Club customer?
A: Teachers, please call our Customer Service department toll-free at 1-800-268-3860 to receive your account number and additional information about Book Clubs.

Q: How do I run a Book Club?
A: It's easy! Each month you'll receive your Book Club kit. Keep the teacher's section and hand out copies of the Book Club News to students. You may wish to go over the News right in class so students can be directed to particular books that will interest them. Be sure to set a date for students to return their order forms to you. Collect the order forms and money as they come in. You can mail, fax, telephone or send us your orders on-line (using ClubsOnline) and earn terrific free books for your class! These Free Picks can be used to build a great classroom library. You'll also earn Bonus Coupons on each order that can be used towards any future Scholastic product purchase!

Q: How do I keep track of students' orders?
A: Make sure that each student's name is on the order form! Collect and tally your students' orders on the Teacher order form provided. Return this order form with attached cheque (or cheques) in the postage-paid envelope provided. Here's a handy tip to stay organized: Keep a Book Club folder and file student orders in it until you actually place your classroom order. Then, when your order arrives, match books to student orders, and file away your packing slip and original order form for your reference. Write your customer account number, as well as the customer service telephone number [ENGLISH: 1-800-268-3860; FRENCH: 1-800-625-8583] inside your folder for easy reference.

Q: How can I make ordering easier?
A: Here are some terrific tips for making ordering easier:
  • Insert the due date for students on their order forms, and post the date in the classroom. Give students a reminder a few days prior to the due date.
  • Share the job of ordering and distributing books with another teacher. You could share Bonus Coupons, too!
  • Enlist the help of a parent volunteer to organize and send in the orders. Have your parent helper set up a phone tree to remind everyone to get his or her orders in on time!
  • Get your students involved! Kids love to help hand out the student news, collect orders and pass out the books. (You'll want to handle the money, of course.)
  • The hardest part is keeping track of the loose change. Encourage students and their parents to pay by cheque, payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd.
Q: How can I increase classroom participation?
A: Here are some ways other teachers have increased classroom participation in Book Clubs:
  • Kids love looking at the offer (student news) when it arrives. Have them point out books that especially interest them.
  • Allow students who are familiar with a particular book or author to share their enthusiasm.
  • Point out one or two books to each student that you know they would love to read.
  • Go online to check out press and student reviews of books.
  • Remind students to bring in their order forms!
Q: How do I get parents involved?
A: Attach a note to the student news reminding parents of the due date for orders. You may want to send a letter home with the first offer encouraging them to participate. Let parents know how important a home filled with books is for creating a lifelong reader. Tell parents that their child's order helps you get free books and materials that the whole class can use and enjoy. Keep parents up-to-date on featured books that supplement what you are doing in the classroom. You may want to send a special letter home each month with the order. Be sure to remind them about the Book Clubs, again, on Parent-Teacher nights.

Q: I am homeschooling my children/I am a daycare teacher. Can I run a Scholastic Book Club?
A: Yes! School market restrictions apply to many of the books we offer. This means that we cannot accept orders from home addresses except from a legal home school (which qualifies as a school market).

We will require a signed letter of verification stating that you are homeschooling your children. Please remember to include the number of children and their ages. Kindly forward the letter to:

A: Let us know that you’ve moved! Call us at 1-800-268-3860.

Q: What do I need to do if I am taking maternity leave or an extended leave of absence?
A: If you are taking maternity leave, a leave of absence, or will be away from school for an extended period of time, please call Customer Service at 1-800-268-3860 to let us know. This will stop all promotion addressed to you from being mailed to your school. If someone will be teaching in your place, please ask them to contact us to set up their own account so that your class can continue to order from Book Clubs.

Q: What do I need to do when I return after being away from school on maternity leave or any extended leave of absence?
A: If you are returning back to school from maternity leave or an extended leave of absence, please call Customer Service at 1-800-268-3860 and we will reactivate your account immediately. It's as simple as that!


PLACING BOOK CLUB ORDERS

Q: How do I place a Book Club order?
A: You can place a Book Club order by mail, phone, fax, e-mail or online! Your books should arrive in 2-3 weeks. Many teachers hand out next month's Book Club News as soon as the book shipment arrives — when interest in reading is at its peak.

Q: Can I add to my order after I've placed it?
A: You may add to your order as long as you phone in your additional order on the same day. Otherwise, you can send in a new order for additional items. (The new order may arrive in a separate shipment.)

Q: If I am not a teacher, can I order directly from a Book Club?
A: Scholastic Book Clubs provide quality books to individual students and also support the reading environment of the classroom. They are only available through classroom, daycare and homeschool teachers.

Q: Do you charge shipping and handling fees?
A: No, we do not charge shipping and handling fees on Book Club orders.

Q: Where do I find my account number?
A: Scholastic Canada assigns a unique account number to each of our customers. This number helps us to identify the teacher, and is located on the top right hand side of the order form, and in the bottom right-hand corner of your Packing Slip. This number may consist of as many as 8 digits.

BONUS COUPONS & FREE PICKS

Q: What are Bonus Coupons & Free Picks?
A: These are rewards that are earned each time you place a minimum order from a Scholastic Book Club.

Q: What are Bonus Coupons and how can I earn them?
A: You will earn Bonus Coupons when placing an order of $30.00 or more on a designated Book Club, based on the total dollar value (minus redeemed Bonus Coupons & Book Club Credits). You can use Bonus Coupons on any Scholastic monthly Book Club, Specials, Book Clubs Reward Catalogue or Classroom Essentials catalogue any time during the school year. Books and other items sold on the student clubs qualify for >Bonus Coupons each month.

The Bonus Coupons you earn with each order can be found on your packing slip, in the bottom right-hand corner. To find out how they were calculated, refer to the Bonus Coupons/Free Picks table on the lower right-hand side of the Book Club order form.

Q: How do I redeem my Bonus Coupons?
A: Detach the Bonus Coupons from your packing slip, indicate the Bonus Coupons amount that is being applied to the order and attach it (along with any other Bonus Coupons or Book Club Credits) to your next order. Mail it in with your payment. Please note Bonus Coupons cannot be redeemed for cash.

Q: Do Bonus Coupons expire?
A: Scholastic Bonus Coupons do not have an expiry date. They may be transferred to another teacher, or combined to get a bonus item.

Q: What are Free Picks and how can I earn them?
A: Free Picks are immediate product rewards earned by teachers at the time they place their classroom order.

You will earn Free Picks depending on the total amount of your current order, as long as it is $30.00 or more. The number of Free Picks earned depends on the value of the order, calculated on the cash amount enclosed (after Bonus Coupons and Book Club Credits have been subtracted). To find out how they are calculated, refer to the Bonus Coupon/Free Picks table on the right-hand side of the teacher Book Club order form.

Please Note: If your Free Pick selection exceeds the amount earned, the excess will be added to the total amount of your order.

Q: How do I redeem my Free Picks?
A: Free Picks must be redeemed at the time of your order. The value chart will indicate the dollar amount of Free Picks you have earned. Free Picks cannot be redeemed for cash.

Q: What are Book Club Credits?
A: Book Club Credits are credit coupons given to customers when:
  • an item is out-of-stock, or an item is missing from a package
  • a customer is not satisfied with a product
  • an item is returned for credit.
Q: Do Book Club Credits have an expiry date?
A: No, Book Club Credits do not have an expiry date.

A: If you are not completely satisfied with any Book Club item, simply return it for credit or refund.

Q: How can I return merchandise?
A: Follow these instructions for returning merchandise:

Any item may be returned. However, we do encourage you to let us know why an item has not met with your expectations so we can be more responsive to your needs. Returns generally take 4-6 weeks to process.

Please Note: All electronics are CSA approved and come with a manufacturer's warranty. The Scholastic 100% guarantee applies for one month after receipt of item after which time the manufacturer's warranty applies. A: Yes, teachers (or parents) may use one cheque for all orders placed at the same time. Please include your Scholastic account number.

Q: Do you accept credit card payments?
A: Yes. Teachers may pay using their VISA, MASTERCARD or AMERICAN EXPRESS.

Q: Do you offer telephone/internet banking?
A: Yes, you can pay your Scholastic Book Club balance by telephone/internet banking. Please contact your bank to set up your account.

Currently the following banks are set up for this service with Scholastic: Bank of Montreal, CIBC, Royal Bank, Scotia Bank, TD Canada Trust, Credit Union Central-British Columbia. Please inquire with your financial institution if your bank is not listed.
