Mix a Student Crew
A primary goal for any Book Fair is to get kids excited
about reading. However, as students get older, they don’t
always equate reading with fun. That’s where the
challenge comes in. By recruiting a team of students to
help with your Fair, you can show that Book Fairs can be
fun and reading is “cool”.
Working with a Crew to plan, promote and conduct a Book
Fair is a great way to build relationships with students.
They can gain real-life work experience, unleash their
creativity, develop personal and social skills and learn
how to be responsible.
This website is full of ideas that have been tried and
tested by Chairpeople just like you, trying to balance
work, family and everything else. It’s organized
into specific sections so it is easy for you to find what
you need at any time. Give it a try. You and your Crew
might just take your Book Fair to an entirely new level.
“We created a positive activity for the students to take part in that
centered on literacy and gave students real work experience.”
Sara Westlake, Book Fair Chairperson
Give students something special to belong to
Would you like to make reading attractive to students,
have the biggest turnout to your Book Fair ever and do
it all with a lot less effort? If you answered “yes”,
then you definitely need a Crew of students.
Think of a Crew as an extension of you. They can help
you plan, promote, set up and sell product during the Fair.
They can also develop fun theme ideas, decorate and create
contests to involve your entire school community. Remember,
you can still recruit adult volunteers to work alongside
your Crew.
Customize your Crew to reflect your student body and the
different groups within it. A team with a variety of interests
and abilities will develop a Fair that is fun, friendly
and full of meaningful experiences. Your Crew members know
what other kids are interested in and will know how to
attract them to the Fair.
Lastly, your Crew will learn responsibility, develop leadership
skills and acquire team building skills.
For volunteers, look to:
- Library Club volunteers
- Art or Language Arts classes
- Student Council or other clubs
- At-risk students
- Leadership students
- Teachers for recommendations
“…We have opened up an opportunity, thanks
to Scholastic, to kids who might not have joined in any
organization had it not been ours. They have found a ‘home’ within
this group and have flourished and developed into a strong
Book Fair Crew, as well as astonishing individuals, over
the years.”
Deb Algadi, Book Fair Chairperson
