Building Classroom Libraries

It’s easy to grow classroom libraries when you invite parents and families to participate by buying books to donate to their child’s classroom. Refer to the Classroom Wish List envelope located in your Planning Kit box for more details.

This will include:

Wish List Display Poster
Cash Donation Cards
Pre-glued Card Pockets
Book Donation Card (reproducible)
Teacher Preview Invitation (reproducible)
Teacher Sneak Peek Poster
Wish List Bookplates



Chairperson’s Role Before & During Fair
Create Classroom Wish List display (see instructions in kit).
Host Teacher Sneak Peek.
Inform parents about Wish List program in letter home, newsletters & on school website.
Position Wish List display at front entrance of Fair or in prominent location.
Locate Bookplates at Cashier Table.
Cashier validates Cash Donation Card at time of purchase.
Distribute Cash Donation Cards daily. Teachers must redeem during current Fair (destroy cards once redeemed).
Collect & distribute donated books to teachers.
Return unused Cash Donation Cards with Fair.


Parent’s Role During Fair
Find their child’s teacher’s name on display board.
Select Book Donation Card & locate requested book.
Purchase book, complete Bookplate and place on inside front cover of book.
Cash Donation Cards can also be purchased, filled out and attached to completed Bookplate. Cashier validates Cash Donation Card at time of purchase.


Great Ideas From Chairpeople
Add photos of teachers (dressed to match theme!) next to their Card Pockets.
Collect & decorate themed gift bags & use to collect donated books.
Use program to add books to your library or donate books to less fortunate schools.


Creating Your Display

Position Wish List Poster in centre of display or bulletin board.
Write each teacher's name and grade level on Card Pockets and affix to display. Create pocket for library if needed.
Place several Cash Donation Cards in each teacher’s Card Pocket.
Make enough copies of Book Donations Cards so each teacher can request needed books.


Hold a Teacher Preview
Complete Teacher Preview Invitations, photocopy and distribute to all teachers one week before preview.
Hang Teacher Sneak Peek Poster in staffroom.
Teachers complete their Book Donation Cards while at preview.
Insert completed Cards into Card Pockets.
Position Wish List Display in highly visible location.






Encourage Families to Donate
In your letter home to parents, explain benefits of Classroom Wish List program.
During Fair, encourage shoppers to purchase a Cash Donation Card or Book Donation Card.


Completing the Donation

Cash Donations
Donor fills in gift amount.
Cashier must validate Card at time of purchase.
Donor personalizes Bookplate and attaches to validated Cash Donation Card*.
Distribute Cash Donation Cards and Bookplates to teachers DAILY to be redeemed during current Fair.

* NOTE: Destroy all Cash Donation Cards once redeemed by teachers. Return any unused Cards with Fair.

Book Wish Donations:
Donor selects book listed on Book Donation Card then takes book and appropriate card to cashier for purchase.
Provide each donor with Bookplate to personalize and affix to inside front cover of donated book.
Distribute donated books to each teacher.
